IPL 2026: Rajasthan Royals keep playoff hopes alive with seven-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants

Rajasthan Royals (RR) reignited their Indian Premier League 2026 playoff campaign with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in a high-scoring Match 64 encounter at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Tuesday night.

In one of the most explosive batting performances of the season, Rajasthan chased down a daunting 221-run target with five balls remaining, finishing on 225/3 in 19.1 overs to snap a three-match losing streak and keep their qualification hopes alive heading into the final stages of the league phase.

The night belonged to teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose breathtaking 93 off just 38 balls transformed the chase into a statement performance rather than a survival exercise. The 15-year-old opener dismantled Lucknow’s bowling attack from the outset, continuing what has become one of the breakout campaigns of IPL 2026.

Despite narrowly missing out on a century, Sooryavanshi etched his name deeper into the record books. He became the youngest player to complete 500 runs in a single IPL season and now holds the highest strike rate ever recorded in an IPL season among batters with 500 or more runs, scoring at a remarkable rate of 236.3.

His assault at the top immediately shifted momentum in Rajasthan’s favour, allowing the hosts to maintain control of the chase throughout the Powerplay and middle overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal provided further attacking intent at the other end before Dhruv Jurel produced a composed unbeaten 53 to guide Rajasthan over the line under pressure.

The successful chase also underlined the batting-friendly nature of Jaipur this season, with another 220-plus first-innings total being overhauled under lights at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

Earlier in the evening, Lucknow Super Giants appeared to have positioned themselves strongly after posting 220/5 following a dominant opening stand between Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis.

Marsh continued his outstanding form with 96 off 57 deliveries, narrowly missing a century, while Inglis hammered 60 from only 29 balls as Lucknow stormed to their fastest team fifty in franchise history, reaching the mark in just 3.3 overs.

The opening pair added 109 runs, marking Lucknow’s fourth consecutive 50-plus opening partnership this season after previous stands of 95, 77, and 135. The partnership also became the franchise’s second-highest stand against Rajasthan Royals for any wicket.

Marsh’s innings carried additional significance statistically, with the Australian becoming the first Super Giants batter to aggregate more than 500 runs in successive IPL seasons. His 96 is also now the highest individual score recorded by an LSG batter against Rajasthan Royals.

At 109 without loss, Lucknow looked on course for a total well beyond 230 before Rajasthan regained some control through Yash Raj Punja, who removed both Inglis and Nicholas Pooran during a crucial middle-overs spell.

Jofra Archer also played an important role late in the innings, delivering a disciplined final over and contributing to Marsh’s run out on 96 to prevent Lucknow from pushing the total even further.

For Rajasthan Royals, the victory could prove season-defining. Having entered the match under significant pressure after three consecutive defeats and a poor home record, the Royals finally secured their first win in Jaipur this IPL season after previously losing all three matches at the venue.

The result keeps Rajasthan alive in the race for the playoffs, while Lucknow Super Giants, already eliminated before the fixture, suffered another setback despite another powerful batting display.

Scorecard:

Lucknow Super Giants: 220-5, Overs 20, Mitchell Marsh 96, Yash Raj Punja 2/35

Rajasthan Royals: 225-3, Overs 19.1, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi 93, Mohsin Khan 1/31
