In Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Gujarat Titans (GT) will face Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.
GT enter the contest with a stifling shroud of vulnerability, plagued by the psychological pain of their disastrous 92-run defeat at the hands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Qualifier 1 in Dharamsala. After witnessing its top bowling force bleed for an alarming 254 runs in that match, Rashid Khan’s (who had a magnificent 4/33 against RR earlier this season) and Kagiso Rabada‘s tournament confidence has been stretched to the extreme limit.
Most importantly, the Titans need to find a faultless tactical strategy to neutralise Rajasthan’s teenage wonder, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old opener has single-handedly rewritten the tournament’s history, scoring an incredible 680 runs this season, the most ever by an uncapped batter in an IPL campaign, while maintaining a deadly 242.86 strike rate. GT’s significant goal will be to put an end to his historic powerplay spree, since Sooryavanshi currently owns the record for the most powerplay runs in a single season (490). Given that the teenager left-hander previously demolished the Titans with a scorching 38-ball 101, they cannot afford a similar performance.
Adding to their worry are the conditions at Mullanpur, which provide zero acclimatisation time for a squad plagued by a glaring zero-for-seven record in 210-plus run-chases since 2025. To survive, Shubman Gill (who has a record 614 career runs against Rajasthan) and Sai Sudharsan (652 season runs) need to have a good outing at the top, with Jos Buttler taking the show ahead. And this becomes more crucial as their middle-order is quite vulnerable, and a wicket at the top means GT are in grave danger. GT’s key goal would also be to weaponise Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj in the powerplay, neutralising Rajasthan’s boundary-breaking danger before the Titans are eliminated from the competition.
The Royals enter at this crucial juncture with complete control over the venue in addition to their tremendous tactical autonomy. The Royals have a clear operational edge over GT after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by 47 runs in the Eliminator on this precise Mullanpur pitch. This venue is ideal for an explosive opening pair led by teenage phenom Sooryavanshi, who enters the match coming off an incredible 29-ball 97 in which he broke the boundary ropes with 12 huge sixes. This familiarity plays right into the hands of an explosive opening vanguard led by Yashasvi Jaiswal and the historic, scary form of a 15-year-old wonder. The youngster enters the match with the Orange Cap, a staggering 242.86 strike rate, and a single-season record of 65 sixes. Rajasthan, led by the venomous accuracy of Jofra Archer (24 wickets) and Nandre Burger, with a look to see the comeback of the deceitful Ravi Bishnoi, is well-positioned to exploit the Titans’ wounded psyche and advance to the final. The spinner would also be paired up with Ravindra Jadeja, who will fire into the rough to deny GT their favored hitting arcs.
The ledger between these two teams tells a story of past supremacy contending with a quickly changing reality. Historically, Gujarat Titans had a 7-3 advantage against Rajasthan Royals since their league debut. This psychological weight is accentuated in high-pressure knockout matches; the Titans completely decimated Rajasthan during their title-winning maiden season, defeating the Royals by 7 wickets in both Qualifier 1 and the Final.
However, the current season has served as a fierce equaliser. In their first match on April 4, the Royals won by six runs in Ahmedabad, but the Titans retaliated ferociously on May 9, when Rashid Khan’s mesmerising 4/33 orchestrated a crushing 77-run thrashing in Jaipur. While history has always protected the Titans’ credentials, Rajasthan’s recent Mullanpur formula and persistent momentum make the past feel less secure.
