Gujarat Titans delivered a ruthless statement performance in the closing stages of the Indian Premier League 2026 league phase, crushing Chennai Super Kings by 89 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday to strengthen their push for a top-two finish while bringing CSK’s playoff campaign to an end.
In a contest carrying knockout-level pressure, Gujarat once again demonstrated why they have emerged as one of the most complete and dangerous teams in the tournament. Their explosive top order overwhelmed Chennai with the bat before a relentless bowling performance dismantled the chase in emphatic fashion.
Asked to bat first, Gujarat Titans piled up a commanding 229/4, driven by yet another masterclass from Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan at the top of the order. The pair added 125 runs for the opening wicket and continued to rewrite record books in what has become one of the most productive partnerships in T20 cricket.
Gill’s innings carried both elegance and authority. The Gujarat captain struck 64 off just 37 deliveries, combining clean timing with aggressive intent as he became only the fourth player in men’s T20 cricket to cross 6000 career runs before turning 27. The stand with Sudharsan was also their 10th-century partnership in T20 cricket, the most by any pair in the format for any wicket in just 46 innings together.
At the other end, Sudharsan once again underlined his remarkable consistency with a superb 84 off 53 balls. The southpaw brought up his fifth consecutive 50-plus score in the IPL, becoming only the fourth player in tournament history to achieve the feat. His innings blended composure with controlled aggression as Chennai’s bowlers struggled to contain him through the middle overs.
Jos Buttler then delivered the finishing blow with a blistering unbeaten 57 from 27 deliveries, ensuring Gujarat powered beyond the 220-run mark. The innings also highlighted the sustained dominance of Gujarat’s batting unit, with Gill and Sudharsan becoming the first pair in IPL history to register 600-plus run seasons together in consecutive years.
If Gujarat’s batting imposed control, their fast bowlers completely dismantled Chennai’s chase.
Pursuing 230 in a must-win encounter, CSK suffered the worst possible start when Sanju Samson fell off the very first ball of the innings, immediately placing the side under immense pressure. Mohammed Siraj then ripped through the top order with a fiery opening spell, claiming three wickets inside his first two overs and effectively breaking the backbone of the chase.
With wickets falling regularly and the required rate escalating rapidly, Chennai never managed to establish any momentum. The only genuine resistance came from Shivam Dube, who briefly threatened to shift the tempo of the contest with a brutal counterattacking innings of 47 off just 17 balls. For a short period, Dube injected life into the chase with a flurry of boundaries and sixes, but once he departed, the innings unravelled completely.
The final collapse reflected Gujarat’s complete control with the ball. CSK lost their last four wickets for just four runs as GT wrapped up one of their most dominant victories of the season.
Siraj and Kagiso Rabada led the destruction with three wickets each, exposing Chennai’s fragile top order with pace, movement and relentless accuracy. Rashid Khan then cleaned up the lower order with three wickets of his own to complete another clinical all-round bowling display from Gujarat.
For the Super Kings, the defeat officially ends a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign that never truly found rhythm. Injuries disrupted the squad throughout the season, beginning with the loss of Nathan Ellis before the tournament even started. MS Dhoni was never fully fit enough to feature during the league stage, marking the first IPL season in which the veteran did not play for Chennai Super Kings. Khaleel Ahmed, Ayush Mhatre and Jamie Overton were also ruled out at different stages, forcing constant changes to the balance of the side.
Despite those setbacks, CSK remained mathematically alive deep into the league phase, a reflection of the fight still shown by the group during difficult stretches of the season. However, inconsistency with both bat and ball ultimately proved costly, particularly in the powerplay and death overs, where Chennai repeatedly fell behind stronger opponents.
The victory further reinforces Titan’s credentials as genuine title contenders. Though even after such a commanding win, GT remain second on the points table. The franchise has significantly strengthened its net run rate advantage and has ensured Sunrisers Hyderabad will require a major victory in their final league fixture to move above them.
More importantly, Gujarat now enter the playoffs with momentum firmly on their side. Thursday’s victory was their sixth win in the last seven matches, and with Gill, Sudharsan, Buttler and their pace attack firing simultaneously, Gujarat Titans look increasingly like one of the teams to beat heading into the business end of IPL 2026.
Scorecard:
Gujarat Titans: 229-4, Overs 20, Sai Sudharsan 84, Mukesh Choudhary 2/36
Chennai Super Kings: 140, Overs 13.4, Shivam Dube 47, Rashid Khan 3/18
