IPL 2026 GT vs SRH: SRH fail to fire as Gujarat pacers rule the roost

In the 53rd game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Gujarat Titans (GT) ascended to the top of the table with a massive 82-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The Titans’ innings consisted of two halves. They struggled heavily in the powerplay, finishing at 34/2 after losing Shubman Gill (5) and Jos Buttler (7) early to the disciplined SRH attack. However, Sai Sudharsan (61) performed an excellent anchor position, while Washington Sundar (50) supplied the required acceleration against his old side. Their 100-run stand elevated a potentially low total to a challenging 168/5. Nishant Sindhu’s late cameo (22) ensured GT had a manageable score on a pitch where stroke-making grew more difficult.

On the dry Ahmedabad surface, SRH’s much-vaunted ultra-aggressive batting style failed terribly. The chase never got started, as Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma (6), and Ishan Kishan (11) all fell in the opening few overs. The middle order provided minimal resistance, with only Heinrich Klaasen (14) and a late flurry from Pat Cummins (19) helping the squad reach double digits. The squad collapsed completely, losing their last six wickets for 32 runs before being bowled out for 86, their lowest score of the season.

GT bowlers delivered a masterclass in powerplay and middle-over domination. Mohammed Siraj (1/11) and Kagiso Rabada (3/28) demolished the SRH top order in the opening six overs, leaving the visitors reeling at 34/4. Jason Holder then tore through the middle order with a brilliant spell of 3/20, including the big wickets of Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy in a single over. Rashid Khan finished the job, taking the final wicket to dismiss SRH in 14.5 overs, demonstrating GT’s full tactical dominance at home.

The bowlers were the only bright spot for SRH, especially in the opening 10 overs. Praful Hinge (2/17) and Sakib Hussain (2/37) used the early movement to cheaply eliminate GT’s top openers, keeping the run rate under 6 for the majority of the powerplay. Captain Cummins (1/20) was extremely economical, but the attack lost steam during the Sudharsan-Sundar pairing. Eshan Malinga, who is typically a threat at this stadium, was pricey today, yielding 46 runs in four overs without a wicket, allowing GT to achieve a total that was far too high for SRH.

With this win, GT now have 16 points from 12 games.

Scorecard:

Gujarat Titans: 168/5, Overs 20, Sai Sudharsan 61, Praful Hinge 2/17

Sunrisers Hyderabad: 86/10, Overs 14.5, Pat Cummins 19, Jason Holder 3/20
